 CAREER

Paul A. Bangura decided to be a Film Producer and Director in 1987 at a time in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa

when he was sharing a single bedroom with three of his friends. His friends were photographers and he was the youngest

among them. He was not interested in being a photographer by then though things were difficult for him  and he could not

figure out where to get income of support. Rent in Freetown though was relatively cheap at that time, a young man

like Paul A. Bangura who was not working or doing business to acquire money found it very difficult to fulfill his own

part of the house payment agreement by the four. This brought about serious pressure on him as to how he could raise

money not only for the house rent but also for his welfare and other basic needs. With such confusion, he decided to

join his three friends who were photographers to do the photography job. His friends for months tried to convince him

to join them but reluctantly he refused because he found no pleasure and love in the job by then. Due to the financial

pressure, he was left with no alternative after when his friends realized that he would not afford to pay his own part of

the rent and he must leave. That was when he decided to join them even though, he had been told by his friends that he

could do it and that he should give it a try.

When finally he agreed to join them on the insistence of one of his friends, Abu White, he ended up becoming the

most popular photographer not only among his friends but also in the field. Because of that, he decided to register

himself as a Professional Photographer to the Photo World Printing Studio in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa.

When the war broke out in March 1990 in Sierra Leone, Paul A. Bangura fled to Ghana where he continued his Photography

business. While in Ghana, he established his own Photo Printing Studio with the brand name

‘SUNLIGHT PHOTO STUDIO’. He cultivated a lot of qualities in his business which gave him the highest standard

to compete with others.

Upon his arrival in Australia in February 2005, he decided to take up the Film making career because he has passion for it.

His love and passion for the job encouraged him to do many courses and workshops just to achieve his goal as a

professional Film maker. While in the business of Film making, he got his encouragement and moral support from

his family and friends

  1. 2.         Actors failing to turn up on set because they have issues with some of their fellow actors

  1. 3.         Also, nature can as well in some cases delay or disturb shooting plans such as rains in the rainy season and
  2. many other environmental factors

  1. 4.         In his own words, housing or location is also another problem or challenge. “When we go out in search of location
  2. for a particular set, we get turned down by either residence owners or office owners or even municipal authorities”

  1. 5.         Finance is one of the most challenging factor in any Production. Without certain amount of finance, irrespective of

In this exclusive interview with Australian TV show, Paul A. Bangura shares an insider detail about his career and  how to break into the movie industry especially the African movie industry.

INTERVIEWER Tell us a bit about yourself

PAUL A. BANGURA – I am a Sierra Leonean living in Australia since 2005. I was born on the 17th of June 19.. to a Christian Family of eight. (5 Boys & 3 Girls). I was blessed to be the first born. My educational journey started at the KDC Primary School in Mambolo Town and Baptist Primary School, Malambay, Mambolo Chiefdom, Kambia District, Northern Province, Sierra Leone, West Africa. I got my Secondary School education in different parts of the country. It all started at the Government Independent Secondary School in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. Bo School in Bo Town, the Southern Province of Sierra Leone and then at the Christ Ambassador Bible School in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. I graduated from the senior college for learning and development in Adelaide, South Australia as a Disability Service Officer in 2008. I like to concentrate a lot while getting the job done and everyone that knows me say I am a very disciplined and religious person. All I can say is that, I love my faith as a Christian and I don’t joke with my religion

INTERVIEWER Why do you insist that we write your name in full?

PAUL A. BANGURA – Well, I insist because my name is my identity. It tells who I am and it represents which family I belong to or the family I came from. I like it when  people find it difficult to pronounce my Surname. I have to teach them how to pronounce my Surname

INTERVIEWERWe heard you have nine children out of wedlock. Is it true? Please tell us!

PAUL A. BANGURA – (Laughs) Hahahaha! Wow, that’s a very interesting question. I always love it when people talk about me behind my back. It shows that I am relevant. Point of correction please, I only have five children for now not nine

INTERVIEWER Please tell us again if you are intending to have more children in the future

PAUL A. BANGURA – Off course, I do want more children. For me, I do not have limitations in having children. I love children a lot because they are a gift from God Almighty. If you go through the Bible and check the book of Psalms 127:3, it says, children are a gift from the lord. They are a reward from him

INTERVIEWER At what point in your life did you decide to become a movie Producer and Director?

PAUL A. BANGURA – I decided to become a movie Producer and Director because of three of my friends I came across in Freetown way back in 1987. They would always say to me that I could do it and so I thought I should give it a try. I was sharing a single bedroom with the three of them. Can you imagine four boys in one single bedroom. I was the youngest among them and they were all photographers. At first I was not interested in becoming a photographer. At a time, things became very difficult for me. No where to get income or support and at the end of every month, all four of us have to contribute to pay our rent. Been that I wasn’t working and I couldn’t afford to pay my own share of the rent, my friends turned against me as they were tired to pay my rent and also because I also refused to join them in the job. One of them by the name of Abu White came to me and he encouraged me to become a photographer.

From that day I decided to become a photographer and I became the most popular and professional photographer among them. Some of their customers even stopped taking pictures from them. They began to come to me for snap shots. That was when I realized that I am naturally gifted to become a photographer. I started to like the job and my customers began to increase rapidly and so because of that, I finally decided to register myself as a professional photographer at PHOTO WORLD PRINTING STUDIO. At that particular time Photo world printing studio was located at a popular place called Eastern Police in Freetown, Sierra Leone. When the war broke out in March 1990, I fled to Ghana where I put more effort in the photography business. While in Ghana, I established my own business as a photographer and I opened my own studio called SUNLIGHT PHOTO STUDIO. I cultivated a lot of qualities in the photography field which gave me the high standard to compete with others

INTERVIEWER Tell us more how you became a movie Producer and Director in Australia?

PAUL A. BANGURA – (Smiles) Beautiful question! It is a long story but I will make it short. Upon my arrival in Australia in February 2005, I decided to take up photography and movie making as my career because I have passion for it. I did so many courses and workshops just to achieve my goal as a professional photographer and videographer. I did so many researches on the internet about where I can enroll myself into a movie Institute or College. I finally got one called TAFE SA South Australia Technical College. They offer lots of courses like Film making, Directing and Editing. I decided to enroll with the College as a Film Making Student. That is where I learned about Film and eventually I became a Film Producer, Director, Screenwriter, Graphics Designer and Editor and here I am today. I put in all my effort into the Film industry and I graduated from TAFE SA Technical College as a Professional Film maker

INTERVIEWER How did you break into business?

PAUL A. BANGURA – Breaking into the business for me was through the encouragement  and moral support I got from family members and friends basically

INTERVIEWER What challenges does an  upcoming Producer and Director face?

PAUL A. BANGURA – The challenges are numerous for example, casts receive their scripts from you and at the end they decide not to play the role. Some of them would tell you that another Producer is paying them more than you. Some would say as long as Mr. A or B is part of this particular scene, I am not going to be part of it because I am not comfortable to act him. The challenges faced by upcoming talents in the industry varies but one of the biggest of them is that upcoming Producers and Directors find it hard to get the right person to play a leading role in the movie because Investors and Producers fear about getting their money back since Africans don’t want to see a face they don’t know in movies so, it’s always a challenge for upcoming Producers and Directors to find that major break through or opportunity

INTERVIEWER What steps would they take to get their foot in the door?

PAUL A. BANGURA – For upcoming Producers and Directors to get their foot in the door, they need to put in a lot of effort in their work. Good Character, Self Discipline, Consistency, Humility and Prayer are important tools to get you through the right door

INTERVIEWER I know filming can be hectic. How long does it take to shoot a movie?

PAUL A. BANGURA – It depends on the script but ideally it takes an average of 24 to 28 days to film a standard feature length cinema craft movie. Depending on the logistics and Production design, sometimes I find it hard to meet the budget and so I have to work with other Producers to enable me film a movie in less than three weeks

INTERVIEWER How do you know what actors to work with?

PAUL A.BANGURA – Knowing what type of actors to work with for me sometimes is based on whoever my budget can afford and the type of person I want to offer the contract. I always have a budget list for the Actors and Producers I want to collaborate with. I mostly consider these issues when I take up a movie project

INTERVIEWER Is the industry more of a hustle to get roles or scripts sent to your casts?

PAUL A. BANGURA – It is in both ways in the movie industry. Sometimes you need to go and give out scripts to the actors you need to play the role in order to make good money in the business. Audition times are the best times to pass on individual scripts or roles. When the individual receive their script, you still would have to audition and read your script before getting the role

INTERVIEWER What is the best way to achieve success in the African movie industry?

PAUL A. BANGURA – The best way to achieve success in the African movie industry is through Prayers, Patience, Encouragement and Hard Work

INTERVIEWER What movie was the most challenging for you to film?

PAUL A. BANGURA – I have one movie that I faced a great challenge during filming. I filmed the movie in the United States of America and it is called “WHO KILLED THE MINISTER’S DAUGHTER”. During the filming of that movie, I really faced a lot of challenges. In fact, out of twenty one casts that I used in the movie, it is only one cast that I had previously directed and been with for two years. The remaining twenty casts were new to me, I haven’t worked with them before not to talk of knowing them but through my calmness and patience, I was able to complete filming the movie

INTERVIEWER What movie did you have the most fun on set?

PAUL A. BANGURA – So far, I have few of them. The first I had so much fun on set while filming is “THE WIFE OF MY BOSS” and “THE WOMANIZER”. On the Womanizer, Eric the lover boy was dating four girls at the same time and one day all the girls came to his house for a visit and he was confused. He didn’t know what to do and who he should speak with. I also had fun when I was filming the “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE” movie. There was so much fun and laughter. Lots of slaps and punching faces

INTERVIEWER Tell us how many movies you have produced since you became a movie Producer and Director

PAUL A. BANGURA – Wow! I was expecting this question long ago. I have produced more than fourteen movies since I became a movie Producer and Director. The first movie I produced in Australia is called “FACEBOOK TRIANGULAR WEB” and that was in 2010. After that I produced my second movie called “THE WIFE OF MY BOSS”. At the beginning of my first and second movies, I faced a lot of challenges but I thank God, I was able to go through it with the support of my crew and supporters

INTERVIEWER Also tell us the movie that made you proud and the movie, your fans and supporters love to watch

PAUL A. BANGURA – The movie that makes me proud is the movie I filmed in the United States of America. It is called “WHO KILLED THE MINISTER’S DAUGHTER”. That was in 2014 after I had won my National Award in 2013

INTERVIEWER You mentioned National Award. Can you please tell us about it?

PAUL A. BANGURA – In 2013, I was nominated for recognition as the best movie Producer and Director within Australia at the celebrations of African Australian National Awards 2013. The event took place at Parliament house in Canberra, Australia on the 27th July 2013

INTERVIEWER What should we be expecting this year?

PAUL A. BANGURA – A lot! This is just the beginning. I am set to produce the most powerful and interesting story in Sierra Leone. I am coming along with three super star actresses. Micheline from the United States of America. Gloria Onyi Okereafor and Ememchukwu Chinelo Rosemary from Nigeria. The best is yet to be seen in Sierra Leone

INTERVIEWER Advice for upcoming actors and actresses

PAUL A. BANGURA – My advice for upcoming actors and actresses is to keep believing in themselves. Open your heart to every possibility. Be talented and have good character. Know and work on your craft. Always be ready for that opportunity. Be very humble and disciplined. Know what you want and go for it and most importantly pray for God’s blessing and grace.
